Africa Has 60% of the World’s Arable Land. So Why Does It Import So Much Food?
Africa has some of the world's largest agricultural resources, including an estimated 60% of the world's remaining uncultivated arable land, yet the continent remains heavily dependent on food imports. From wheat and rice to maize and cooking oils, African countries spend billions importing food that could potentially be produced locally. So why does Africa struggle to feed itself despite its vast farmland, favorable climates and centuries-old farming traditions? The answer lies in underinvestment in agriculture, weak infrastructure, climate pressures, changing farming practices and growing dependence on commercial seeds, synthetic fertilizers and imported agricultural inputs. As Africa searches for food security, the debate over traditional African seeds, GMO crops, fertilizers and the future of African agriculture has never been more important.
